Helping the Homeless
What Do You See ?
when you see a homeless person on the street, what do you see?
an alcoholic?
a junkie?
a bum?
I see someone who needs help – help that I am in a position to provide
a few quid less in my wallet is not going to cause me much hardship, but it will make a lot of difference to them
more important than the money I give though, is my acknowledgement of them as a person – I stop and chat to them
Nothing deep – I don’t ask for their life history
Just 5 minutes conversation I would have with any stranger
Dunc’s Charity Appeal
O.K. guys, I’m embarrassed to admit it – but I need your help
I am due to retire in May next year on a pittance of a pension that won’t come close to covering all my household expenses – never mind the 4 charities I support, the 3 dogs that expect me to provide them with food and treats, the 2 wood pigeons, two squirrels, 3 fucken big crows (vicious bastards), 2 blackbirds (one male, one female), and fuck knows how many (they fly too fast for me to count) little sparrows, thrushes, chaffinches and tits that expect me to put food out for them twice a day
I’ve told the dogs there are hard times looming and I may have to take them into town next year to help me drum up enough money busking to afford my wine their dog food
then I heard the news that a Saudi Prince intends to give £32 billion to charity – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-33353370 – so I began drafting a letter . . .
Food for Thought
Based on an ancient story about hunger and sharing, this animated video is part of Caritas’ “One Human Family, Food for All” campaign. The “allegory of the long spoons” teaches us that when we struggle to feed only ourselves, everyone goes hungry. But when we focus on our neighbour’s hunger, we discover there are ways to feed everyone.
Man Surprises Woman on Train
